Sculptra™ is an injectable implant that contains microparticles of poly-L-lactic acid, a biodegradable and biocompatible synthetic polymer. Lactic acid polymers have been used for many years in dissolvable stitches and soft tissue implants and have been found to be very safe.

Sculptra™ is intended for restoration and/or correction of the signs of facial fat loss in people with HIV.  However, it is commonly used for cosmetic correction of deeper wrinkles and creases, and for correction of volume loss in the cheeks and under the eyes in non-HIV patients, as a non-FDA indication. It has been used in Europe for the purpose of cosmetic correction for years.

Sculptra™ is injected below the skin in the area of fat loss, or under a wrinkle. Due to the swelling from the solution in which Sculptra™ is mixed, one gets an immediate correction.  However, in a few days the solution is absorbed, and the wrinkles and the tissue loss reappears.  However, over the next four weeks or so, new collagen is deposited at the sites of injection and correction of the areas is seen.  More than one session may be required for full correction.  A consultation with Dr. Lashgari is required to determine whether more than one session is necessary.

Treatment effects will differ for each person.  In a clinical study, the treatment result lasted for up to 2 years after the first treatment session.  Theoretically, since a patient's own collagen is produced, the results may last even longer.  However, only anectdotal data beyond the two year study are available.
