What is Liposculpture?
Liposculpture is the removal of unwanted bulges due to localized fat deposits. Through small incisions, a suction tube is inserted and unwanted fat is removed by a suction vacuum.
What is Tumescent Anesthesia?
Tumescent anesthesia is the technique developed by dermatologists for performing liposuction surgery under local anesthesia. The advantages of tumescent anesthesia are:
- Decreased post op discomfort
- Minimal blood loss
- Eliminating the risk and expense of general anesthesia
What Areas are Treated?
The most common area treated is the outer upper outer thighs of women, called the "saddle bags." The second most common area is the tummy. Other areas treated are flanks in men (love handles), double chins, waist, hips, buttocks, inner thighs, calves, ankles, and upper arms. This procedure can also correct enlarged breasts in males.
Who is a Good Candidate for Liposculpture Surgery?
People who are at or near their ideal body weight are the best candidates for liposuction surgery. These individuals find that even with regular exercise and diet they are unable to lose unwanted fat accumulations. Individuals who are slightly to moderately overweight may still benefit from liposuction. Particular areas can be recontoured to improve the figure. In general, they must have realistic expectations of what can be achieved. This technique is not for very obese people and is not a substitute for weight loss. Age is not a factor. The patient should be in good general health with no significant heart or lung problems. Is This Procedure Safe?
Tumescent liposuction Surgery is extremely safe, with a low percentage of minor problems such as temporary swelling, irregularity, and transient numbness. If true tumescent anesthesia is done, the risk of major complications is almost zero.
Where is Liposuction Surgery Performed?
All cases are performed either in the office or at the outpatient surgery center under local anesthesia with oral sedation and an analgesic.
What is the Recovery Period?
The recovery time varies with how many areas are treated and the type of activity the patient intends to resume. Most patients are performing routine duties after two days. Exercise may be resumed about a week after the procedure.
Will There Be Bandages?
There are small absorbent bandages under a pressure garment for a couple of days. The pressure garment is worn under clothing for about one week.
Will the Fat Regrow?
Most of one's fat cells have developed by time of puberty. The fat cells either swell or shrink in size depending on weight gain or loss. When fat cells are removed from a treated area, they do not return. Liposuction surgery is indeed the only true spot reducer. Long-term body weight, however, is not influenced by liposuction.
What Will Happen to the Excess Skin?
Skin is a dynamic organ which has elasticity and in most cases is able to shrink and accommodate the new body contour. Those who are poor candidates for liposculpture because of decreased skin elasticity can have the skin removed, if they so desire, at a later date. This is almost never necessary.
Can the Procedure be Repeated?
Yes. There is a maximum limit to the amount of fat that can be extracted during any one operation. In some instances you may want to repeat or have more removed at another time. It is best to wait at least six months between procedures.
When Will I Notice the Results?
Usually between a week to a month. However, improvement continues for up to one year.
Will I Lose Weight?
Weight loss maybe minimal because fat weights very little. The difference will be seen primarily in the way your clothes fit you, and you will look slimmer. The appearance of cellulite is occasionally improved.
